This past weekend, our Catholic church hosted their 2nd annual Oktoberfest. This year was actually supposed to be the 3rd Oktoberfest but Hurricane Harvey cancelled it last year due to the extensive remodeling that had to be done.
It was a great family friendly church event to help raise money for the Catholic parish in Dickinson, Texas that I have been attending for almost 25 years. It was also great that as a family business, we were able to help out by being a sponsor this year. I think there will always be a soft place in my heart for the church and school where I grew up, met my husband in 1st grade, got married, and now get to see my children grow up in. We are very lucky to be a part of Queen of Angels!
Genevieve got to wear her authentic German dirndl dress which I bought when I was in Bavaria, Germany last year. I wish I had been able to find affordable Lederhosen while I was there and then Matthew could have been matching too!
They had this great deal at the festival where each child could get a $5 wristband and included with this wristband was 6 tickets for games, a snowcone, popcorn, and cotton candy. They even had a petting zoo (provided by my dear sis-in-law who basically has a family farm), face painting, and German food & beer.
We enjoyed watching some of the entertainment as well, including German & Irish dancing, live bands, and Queen of Angel’s student performances.
What a lot of people did NOT know, was that I was actually going to be a part of the Irish dancing group! If you had asked me last year if I was going to be doing Irish dancing, I would have told you that you were crazy. Little did I know, obviously. We tried to get Genevieve to do Irish dancing earlier this year but she wasn’t comfortable with being around people she didn’t know so I decided I was going to do it instead. Yes, I’m kinda insane, but most people already know that, haha. It has actually turned out to be a lot of fun and allows me to a get a couple of hours away from the kids each week to get a little exercise.
Besides, it’s pretty cool to watch and listen to the hard shoe dancers! I doubt I will ever be anywhere close to being as good as Riverdance but as long as I am able to one day do a cool hard shoe dance, I will be extremely happy. Side note: I am currently looking for affordable hard shoes so if you know of anyone selling some, let me know!
I think it turned out to be a very successful fundraiser for the school although it was sooo very hot and felt nothing like fall. Here’s to hoping for a little cooler weather next year!
I’m already looking forward to next year and hopefully not messing up my Irish dance then if I get to do it again. It is a good thing that God makes you practice your virtue of humility occasionally. He sure does have a sense of humor!
If anyone has any questions about the church we attend (with the Latin Mass only) or are interested in Irish dancing in the Texas/Louisiana area, please let me know! I would be happy to answer any questions you may have!
I hope you are enjoying plenty of fall festivities with actual fall weather! At the end of the day, I was sure hoping the beer booth would be selling some type of wine coolers, German or not, haha.
